Leave her in the downy for a few days. I also use use Pantene smooth and shine anti-frizz serum after the hair has dried. If the hair is dry it just soaks up this stuff. I happen to use a straightener (just be careful that the straightener is not too hot or it will melt the hair. I use it on the one or two setting and it does a great job)and then travel hot curlers on the dolls hair. It turns out great.

This Molly's hair was so bad I could not brush it with out breaking the hair. She sat in downy for a few days and then a really good rinsing, shampooing, drying then about 3 pumps of the oil. In fact I added another pump to her hair a few days later and re-curled. That was about a year ago and this picture of Molly is from last week. Her hair is still soft and easy to brush. Hope this helps.
